Scanning to Fax - VistaScan & PageManager

This technical note covers describes the VistaScan and PageManager scan-to-fax features.

In addition to the scan-to-printer settings provided in both PageManager and VistaScan 3.x, both programs offer basic settings for PC fax software. Most fax software vendors provide fax-print drivers, so that a fax can be sent from any application with the Print command - both UMAX programs treat scan-to-fax as a printing process. Fax software is not included with the UMAX software - you must already have a fax software package that can be "printed to".

VistaScan 3.x - Scan-to-Fax

The fax settings in VistaScan 3.x are extremely simple - you just need to change the preferences to point the Fax destination to your fax-print driver. All other settings are taken from the fax software defaults - typically an addressing window will be launched after you have completed the scan, although the fax-print driver options will vary.

To configure VistaScan fax-to-print you simply set the Fax destination preferences to the fax-print driver installed on your PC.

Presto! PageManager 4.0 - Scan-to-Fax

Like VistaScan, PageManager relies on the presence of a fax-print driver, in which each software vendor has their own settings, addressing controls etc.

When launched PageManager checks the list of installed printer drivers for any names that include "fax" - if found the 'Fax' and 'Fax Setup' options are enabled in the file menu.

PageManager offers the same Setup options as any other printer driver (below) - it is important to use the "Printer Default" setting for Halftone Image. If your original scans were of A4 pages we also recommend the "Fit to Page" option, which will reduce the image slightly to fit the fax imaging area.

By selecting the "Appear in Application Bar" you can turn faxing in to a drag-and-drop operation - any document thumbnail can be dropped on the Application Button icon to be printed to the fax driver: pmfaxbutt.gif (1210 bytes)
One of the most common questions about PageManager's fax option is how to send multi-page documents - this is very simple using the thumbnail view of your archived images. Drag-and-drop each of the pages you want to send in to a single thumbnail "stack" - the multi-page thumbnail icon will appear.

When this thumbnail is dragged to the fax Application Button every page in the "stack" will be combined and sent as a single fax.
