Troubleshooting SCSI Scanner Installations
Title

Description

Top SCSI Troubleshooting Issues Notes on common issues not specifically covered in other Tech Notes.
MacG4 freezes on start-up This is a problem only affecting Mac G4 Silver computers with 4 x 64bit PCI slots running Mac OS 9.2.n. Check this link.
I want an OS X driver for my bundled Advansys SCSI card Ensure that you read the 'Read me' files before attempting to load the driver. Follow this link.
Scanner Not Found
Error 00000000h
Link or Hardware Error
Using the UMAX UDS-IS11/ISA (PC):
Try moving the card to a different ISA slot and reinstalling the VistaScan driver
Check for a conflict in the System control panel Device Manager and try the DTC drivers

Using an Adaptec or other third party card:
Ensure miniport drivers are installed and remove any UDS-IS11/ISA system devices
When using Adaptec's EZSCSI software a "Scanners" device group may indicate a conflict.
If you use an Ultra-Wide (eg 2940UW) card, read the special notes on cabling and termination
If you are using a Blue & White G3 read this tech note

SCSI Troubleshooting - Top Issues
MacOS
Apple Blue & White G3
Drivers prior to MagicScan 4.3 or VistaScan 3.5 require patches to support the new SCSI architecture of the B&W G3 - full details and a list of compatible cards are given in a separate tech note.
SCSI Errors & Software Conflict
A common source of problems - including erratic communications, scanner not found, crash when scanning and horizontal lines in scans - is a know issue with D2's Silverlining and low-level disk driver software. If you have either Silverlining or D2 extensions installed, disable them then reboot the Mac before retrying the scan.
SCSI ID Conflicts - Dual Bus Macs
The multi-bus SCSI architecture of recent (eg beige G3) Macs can cause some device conflicts:
1. Check no other device on ANY SCSI bus uses the same SCSI ID as the scanner (eg internal ZIP drive).
2. Try the scanner on ID6 or ID4
3. Check there isn't a second terminated device in the external chain (in particular check the Termination switch on the back of any ZIP drives)
4. Try booting the Mac with all extensions disabled (hold down Shift during startup)
Windows 95, 98 & NT4
Ultra-Wide SCSI Cards
Adaptec 2940UW or other Ultra-Wide SCSI card; scanner not found or not recognised / link or hardware error. As documented on Adaptec's web site, when connecting a narrow SCSI device to a UltraWide bus, you must use a High-Byte (16 to 8 bit) converter such as the ACK-68P-50P-E. A 68 pin to 50/25 pin cable is not sufficient.
The following Adaptec 2940UW BIOS settings are also recommended for the scanner's SCSI ID:
Initiate Sync Negotiation - disabled; Enable Sync Disconnection - disabled; Maximum Trnasfer Rate - 5MB/sec.
If possible Ultra SCSI should also be disabled.
Adaptec/other SCSI Card - Scanner Not Found
If you've use an Adaptec/compatible card and have upgraded to VistaScan 3.1, you can stop searching for the "Custom Install" option - all cards (including the UMAX) now use MPD drivers. If the driver can't find the connected scanner, download and install the latest Win95 or 98 drivers from www.adaptec.com. Also see our technical note on EZSCSI conflicts.
