General Questions

I have both a scanner and a printer connected to the same printer port - one or both devices does not work correctly
Can I connect an Astra 600P/610P/1210P/1220P/2000P  to the same port as my parallel printer? My scanner doesn't work when my printer is turned on. Since installing my scanner I have been unable to use my parallel printer.

It is important first that you check with the printer manufacturer to see if the printer requires a dedicated parallel port - in some cases, printers cannot share the port with another device. In any setup, the number of parallel devices connected to a single port cannot exceed two.

In some cases the scanner may only work when the printer itself is turned off (or its printer spooling software is disabled) - in general the scanner will be connected to the PC, and the printer to the scanner (check the order of connection).

Example: Lexmark 1020 printer - in testing by UMAX it was found that the scanner could only work with the printer attached if the printer was turned off, with the parallel port set to EPP mode. When the parallel port was changed to SPP mode, the scanner and printer could coexist fine.

We are currently unable to provide a compatibility list of parallel printers as the main logic board and BIOS of the PC is as much an issue as the printer and driver: the most important issue is the configuration of the parallel port, which must be in EPP or SPP mode (NOT ECP). In some cases it may be necessary to install an additional parallel port in the PC in order to use both devices simultaneously.

I have a transparency adaptor connected to my Astra 600P scanner but the driver gives an error saying that it can't be used with this version
What driver version is required for the Astra 600P or the UTA-2A transparency adaptor?

The combination of the Astra 600P with the UTA-2A transparency adaptor is only supported by Update Disk 1.06 or CD1.05 or later (earlier versions support the 600P in reflective mode only, using the Update disks).

Are any of the other Astra scanners available with a transparency adaptor?
I have an Astra scanner and I wish to purchase a transparency adaptor for it can I?
Scanner Model Transparency Adaptor (UTA)
Astra 610P, 610S, 1210P, 2000P, 2000U No transparency option available, no "Option port" on back panel
Astra 600S, 600P, 1200S UTA-2A (now obsolete)
Astra 1220P, 1220S, 1220U UTA-3A
Astra 2100U, 2200SU UTC (UMAX Transparency Convertor - flat illumination panel)

I have an Astra 1210P scanner and it does not come with Vistascan, is there anywhere I can get hold of the Vistascan driver?
Can I use the Vistascan driver with my Astra 1210P scanner?

The Astra 1210P scanner does not use Vistascan as it's driver.  It uses a driver called scan utility. Vistascan will not work with the Astra 1210P scanner.

What is the minimum specification PC I need to use my scanner?
IMC recommend a minimum specification of:

Intel 486-DX33 or faster, Intel Pentium (MMX), Pentium Pro, Pentium II
120MB free on drive C (excludes storage space for images)
32MB RAM (more if using Adobe Photoshop)
One free ISA (PCI for new purchases) slot for the UMAX SCSI card, including a free I/O address in the range 220h-340h
Windows 95 or 98, Windows NT v3.5x or v4.0x (NB minimum of 32MB RAM recommended for NT, some bundled applications will not operate under Windows NT).

MacOS computers should use aPowerPC processor, have a minimum of 120MB of hard disk space free (excluding storage space for images) and 32MB of RAM (more if using Adobe Photoshop).

Error: "Old version of driver error type kit error code -5", Mac won't boot with scanner connected
When the scanner is connected to my Mac, I only get a grey screen at boot-up. According to an error message I need a new version of my scanner driver.

Certain models of MacOS computer are affected by an Apple design error which requires the installation of a patch to fix SCSI timing problems. The affected models include: Apple Performa 6360, 64xx, 54xx, UMAX Apus 2000, Apus 3000.

Installation of the patch will fix a number of documented problems using several system extensions and a low-level patch installed on the IDE disk driver - the vital low-level portion can only be installed if the IDE hard disk was initially formatted correctly using Apple's Drive Setup 1.22 or later (also FWB 2.05+). In a few extreme cases, the hard disk may need to be reformatted to avoid the SCSI design fault.

The Apple 6360/54xx/64xx Update Disk 1.0 is available from all Apple authorised service centres and resellers or from Apple's web sites. Owners of UMAX Apus computers should contact UMAX Support for a copy of the appropriate updater disk.

Should the lamp of the scanner always be lit?
The scanner lamp is always lit - is this damaging the scanner? What is the life of the scanner lamp and can I replace it?

The scanner lamp of most recent UMAX scanners will remain lit while the scanner is turned on - this does not damage the scanner and uses very little power (leaving the lamp on lets the lamp intensity stabilise improving the scanner's accuracy). The average life of the cold-cathode lamps used in the scanner is around 10,000 hours - however, the scanner lamp is difficult to replace and will normally only be changed by an approved service centre.

How do I share my scanner across a network?
Is it possible to share my scanner with other users? Where is the scanner networking software installed?

UMAX scanners include driver software which allows them to be shared across most common network types between PCs running the same operating system - for example Mac to Mac or Windows 95 to Windows 95. The "server" PC controls the scanner over SCSI or parallel, but can act on the instructions of "clients" elsewhere on the network, sending the images to the clients using ethernet. Although this is much slower than connecting the scanner locally, large workgroups can share a single scanner for occasional use.

The scanner networking software is not installed by default, and must be added to the PC or Mac by performing a Custom Install of the VistaScan software - PC users will gain the Scan Manager and Scan Server programs, MacOs users will gain UMAX Share and UMAX Chooser.

For detailed instructions on network scanning, please see the separate technical notes for Mac or PC.
