| Should I upgrade my
driver? DON'T just upgrade because a newer version of the driver is available - every time you install new software you run the chance that the driver will fail to work, or may no longer support your scanner. 1. Look at the version histories and check what the differences are between your current version and the latest 2. Check the Driver Status table and make sure the new version supports your scanner. 3. Backup your system and registry before installing ANY new software. Reboot your PC and disable any anti-virus software, which may interfere with the installation procedure. Can I get the latest driver on CD? Yes - UK customer can purchase driver upgrades from our online shop, although sometimes the latest driver released on our FTP site for download is not yet available on CD. In some cases SCSI scanner users may also need to upgrade their scanner firmware, which is an additional cost. Will the newer version of the driver work with my discontinued scanner model? In most cases yes, but we can't guarantee the stability of the driver or that new features will work properly. Where possible we track incompatibilities and include them in version histories, however our support engineers will recommend only using the appropriate driver listed above. Historically UMAX's policy on the support of discontinued models has been excellent, but don't necessarily expect old scanners to be supported in new operating systems. Likewise a SCSI card bundled with a scanner four years ago won't necessarily work in the latest, fastest workstations! How do I upgrade my scanner firmware? A few drivers and OS combinations require scanner firmware upgrades, mainly to support modifications to the SCSI control protocols. Firmware E/EPROMs can usually be purchased as spare parts, if you are able to fit them yourselves, or upgrades can be included in a return-to-base scanner service. As many UMAX scanners share the same underlying control protocols, there is some cross-compatibility between low- and high-end scanners. The users who benefit most are owners of low-end SCSI scanners, many of which can be controlled by the professional MagicScan driver. Again, where possible we try to track any compatibility issues but our support engineers will only recommend the driver listed above. Will the driver download work if I am not a UK customer? Our drivers are taken directly from the International releases of the scanner CDs, without modification - in most cases only English language support files are included. These are the SAME drivers released via www.umax.com, although they are compressed in a different way - there is no reason why a driver downloaded from our site should not be supported by other UMAX distributors or subsidiaries, including the USA. |
